You got the job. Congratulations to the new girl!
What now? How does the new girl take it to the next level?
Never fear, Toni is here. I’ve got some great tips to help you hit the ground running.
7 Simple Tips & Hints
- Be Professional
- Be Enthusiastic
- “Google” Yourself
- Know Your Fan Base
- Arrive Early and Stay Late
- Be all 3: Honest, Reliable, Straight Forward
- Be You
Professionalism: Be professional. This encompasses attitude, demeanor, and attire. Study how successful counterparts/contemporaries dress. Follow suit, literally. Dress for the next level of your career, the position you want to hold, not necessarily the position for which you were hired. Brush up on terminology. Every company has its own language and acronyms. Learn fast and keep up!
Enthusiasm: Relish in the opportunity to learn, despite the paycheck at the end of the week or lack thereof. Have short term memory when it comes to the bad days. Stay emotionally consistent and be genuine. (Remember there was time when you weren’t employed in this crazy economy!)
“Google” Yourself: Companies are particular about who they hire; most “pre-screen” by conducting a quick search on Google, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Know what current/future employers will find, ensure the information represents your brand. If it is unfavorable be prepared to explain.
Not-a-Fan: Prepare for the people who are not and may never be a fan. Expect it! There’s no need to lose sweat equity trying to convert these individuals. Focus on the point: excelling professionally.
Arrive Early and Stay Late: This is one of the easiest ways to show initiative, consideration for others’ time and to be taken seriously. (Toni’s Note: For the under 25-ers: Make it a point to arrive EARLY even if you’re not a morning gal.)
Be Honest, Reliable and Straight Forward: Simple!
Be YOU: Find a way to be yourself within the context of business culture. No need to get lost in the cubicles; be memorable.
Remember Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
