Unlike many Americans young and old, I must admit I am not a ‘Twihard’.  I am typically a fan of reading the book before a movie comes out, and the Twilight series has been an exception to the rule.  Although, I haven’t read one page of this literary drama, I have reluctantly gone and seen all of the movies and have often left the theater very much confused.  Then I saw Breaking Dawn Part 2 and it all clicked!

This movie is, by far, the most interesting and thrilling of the saga. The story line can easily be followed by a non ‘Twihard’. While I didn’t leave the theater with the bittersweet feeling that the inevitable end has finally came and gone, I did leave inspired to read the Twilight Saga.  I am sure the other four movies are done more justice in its literary form than the silver screen could portray and that non ‘Twihards’ will get a better and more exciting understanding of all things Team Edward and Team Jacob.  Although I think the first four movies should have been rolled into one, Breaking Dawn Part 2 definitely stands on its own and is a must see movie for all.

TV Dinner: Sparkle

By: Dr. Essence Robinson

Akin to the original, Sparkle is the story of three sisters from Harlem trying to break into the music scene during the Motown area against their mother’s wishes. Sparkle is a remake of the 1976 film inspired by the Supremes. The movie is a musical drama debuting the sixth season American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks and starring the late great Whitney Houston.

The cast (which also includes Mike Epps, Tika Sumpter, Omari Hardwick and Derek Luke to name a few) appeared on BET’s 106 & Park in August, they compared the 2012 rendition to the original by simply stating, “It is Sparkle with a twist”. Although the movie takes a different spin in the end from the 1976 film, those who may or may not be familiar with the original will enjoy this version. Songs like, Hooked on Your Love and Something He Can Feel, will have you wanting to get out of your seat and join along in song and dance, while Whitney Houston singing His Eye is on the Sparrow will bring you to tears. Rent or buy both renditions of Sparkle and identify the twist. Enjoy the songs by soul musician Curtis Mayfield and a few new ones composed by R. Kelly.
